So there is some talent still left in Pakistan :) Some brains not yet drained out of Pakistan.
Engineers at PAC makes a copy of iPAD, called PACPAD, based on hardware components imported from China and Google's Android OS.
Well, its a good achievement... but... Why PAC is doing this? Don't they have any better things to do?
I recall my experience of working at AERO when our Engineers at Pak Forces were involved in an array of high-figh (hi-fi) projects aimed to make Pakistan a strong military power. Those days (Pre-Nuke-Explosion era), everything from making a small bomb to producing tanks and missiles and even Nuke capability was kept as a top secret. They were real proud days for Pakistan. However, later many things have changed. Father of our nukes Program (Dr. A. Q. Khan) was sorted out. Our enemies were ensured that we will keep our Nukes so safe that they will never be used for the purpose they were built for. After that, an era of destruction started in Pakistan. Funding for R&D projects started to decline.
The intelligent brains in Pakistan (includes me also) were demotivated and they started to migrate to foreign lands. And today, what is happening in the R&D centers of of our military tycoons??? They are making copies of iPADs.... Hurrah!
On one side, I must say that "Something is better than nothing". But on the other side, and more realistically speaking, this is not what they are supposed to do. Military's R&D budget is not for producing iPAD copies. Its a pure commercial activity... This commercial activity must flourish in Pakistan, but not at the cost of Tax Payer's money. (If there are any Tax Payers left).
Our armed forces already have a bad fame for indulging and controlling the Military Inc. From Sugar and Floor Mills to Cement factories, from running educational institutions to producing Fertilizers... They are in every business. In fact they are excelling in all of them.
What is more important for our Military Might is to concentrate on its CORE PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Do you know that since last 45 years, our Army has not won a single war (even on cards). From Fall of Dhaka to Siachin, to Kargil and even in this America's war against Islamists, the looser is always our forces. Yes, of course, they have always been a winner against civilian governments, but against foreign forces, they don't show their strength.
So, to conclude, let civilians make these iPAD copies (if they can) and let the engineers fed on Public Taxes (and Foreign Remittances) work on something more valuable.
